Designing Eco Eko: Reimagining Public Spaces in Lagos

In April 2025, the UrbanBetter Lagos Cityzens Hub hosted the Lagos Cityzens Clean Air Lab, bringing together more than 80 stakeholders from government, academia, civil society and grassroots communities. The two-day workshop focused on co-creating healthier urban spaces that make it easier to walk, cycle and breathe clean air.

Building on earlier design sessions, participants selected Eco Eko as the model Clean Air Training Zone. The design features cycling lanes, shaded walkways, recycling hubs and inclusive sports facilities. Stakeholders worked across four sectors, including transport, planning, waste and sport, to refine the concept and propose solutions to challenges such as poor infrastructure, unsafe conditions and negative perceptions around cycling.

The National Stadium in Surulere was chosen as the pilot site for Lagos’ first Clean Air Training Zone due to its accessibility, popularity for fitness and existing infrastructure. Organisations pledged commitments ranging from piloting non-motorised transport infrastructure to tree planting, air quality monitoring and behaviour change campaigns.

The Clean Air Lab demonstrated how data, citizen science and collaboration can drive real change. With Eco Eko as a prototype, Lagos is taking bold steps towards cleaner air, healthier lifestyles and more inclusive public spaces.
